One of the people Chris comes across in the book is named Jan Burres. Jan is similar to Chris in that she is a rubber tramp. Jan was inpressed by Chris. Also, he reminded her of the son she had that was about his age. Being around Chris reminded her of her son, and she became like a mother to Chris for a while. Jan and her boyfriend taught him some things about being a tramp, so Chris would be better prepared to be in the wild. Chris found that they were people that he was able to trust, and wrote to them throughout his travels.

Another character that Chris meets during his journey is Wayne Westerberg, who became a true friend to Chris. Wayne impacted Chris's life greatly. To start, while Wayne was driving he came across Chris, who was hitchhiking on the side of the road. he felt vulnerable to help and care for Chris because he looked exhausted and starving. Wayne provided Chris with a place to stay, food, and a well paying job. this affected Chris because it kept him alive longer. If Wayne did not take Chris in and care for him, then Chris might have died from starvation a lot sooner. Chris also affected Wayne's life. For instance, Wayne stated that Chris was the hardest worker he had ever seen. When Chris accepted the job working for Wayne's business, he did not stop until the job was done. in addition, Chris told fascinating stories about his travels to Wayne and other towns people, which gave them a closer bond.
